About the 16 Team Bracket
A 16 team bracket takes four rounds and 15 games to crown a champion. Type your teams and they’re seeded the standard way, from 1 v 16 down to 8 v 9, with the top four seeds spread across the four quarters of the bracket. Tap any game to enter the score and the winner moves on. Print it in landscape, put it on a TV, or share a link everyone can follow. Only 9 to 15 teams? The top seeds get byes.
How it works

- Pick single eliminationChoose your sport for the right scoring. Add a third-place game, or switch to double elimination if every team should play at least twice.
- Run it from your phoneTap a game, enter the score, and the bracket fills itself in. Share the view link or QR code, or print a copy for the wall.
16 team bracket matchups
In a seeded 16 team bracket, every first-round pair adds up to 17. From the top of the bracket to the bottom, the opening games are:
- First quarter: 1 v 16 and 8 v 9
- Second quarter: 5 v 12 and 4 v 13
- Third quarter: 6 v 11 and 3 v 14
- Fourth quarter: 7 v 10 and 2 v 15
If the higher seeds keep winning, the quarterfinals are 1 v 8, 4 v 5, 3 v 6 and 2 v 7, the semifinals are 1 v 4 and 2 v 3, and the final is 1 v 2. The 8 v 9 game is the closest first-round matchup on paper, and its winner earns a shot at the top seed. This is the layout big college tournaments use for each region, which is why a 16 team bracket feels familiar to most players.
Rounds and games
Sixteen teams play 15 games in four rounds: 8 in the round of 16, 4 quarterfinals, 2 semifinals and the final. The champion wins four games in a row. Half the field plays once, a quarter plays twice, the semifinal losers play three times, and the two finalists play four. A third-place game adds one game, for 16.
The same 16 teams need 30 or 31 games in a double elimination bracket and 120 in a full round robin, so a single bracket is by far the quickest way through a field this size.
Byes for 9 to 15 teams
With fewer than 16 teams, the missing teams turn into byes for the top seeds, and only the remaining pairs play in round one:
- 9 teams: 7 byes; only 8 v 9 plays first.
- 10 teams: 6 byes; 7 v 10 and 8 v 9.
- 11 teams: 5 byes; 6 v 11, 7 v 10 and 8 v 9.
- 12 teams: 4 byes; 5 v 12, 6 v 11, 7 v 10 and 8 v 9.
- 13 teams: 3 byes; 5 first-round games.
- 14 teams: 2 byes; 6 first-round games.
- 15 teams: 1 bye; 7 first-round games.
From the quarterfinals on, the bracket is a full 8. Teams with a bye can arrive one round later, a nice perk to mention at check-in.
How long does a 16 team tournament take?
Work it out in waves, sets of games that run at the same time. With 40-minute games:
- 1 court: 15 waves, about 10 hours. Spread it over a weekend.
- 2 courts: 8 waves (4 for the first round, 2 for the quarterfinals, then the semifinals and the final), about 5 hours 20 minutes.
- 4 courts: 5 waves, about 3 hours 20 minutes.
- 8 courts: 4 waves, about 2 hours 40 minutes.
Beyond 8 courts nothing gets faster: the quarterfinals, semifinals and final always take three waves, one after another. If you have lots of courts and a full day, spend it on more games instead of a faster finish.
Pools first, then the bracket
For a full-day event, start with 4 pools of 4. Each pool plays a round robin (6 games per pool, 24 in all), so every team gets three games. Then:
- Top two of each pool go into an 8 team bracket: 7 more games, 31 in total.
- Pool winners only go into semifinals: 3 more games, 27 in total.
Seed the playoff from the pool results so pool winners meet runners-up from other pools first. The 8 team bracket page shows that layout, and the volleyball tournament page walks through a full pools-to-playoffs day.
