About the 8 Team Bracket
Need an 8 team bracket? This one is ready to fill in. Type your eight teams and the quarterfinals are seeded the standard way: 1 v 8, 4 v 5, 3 v 6 and 2 v 7. Three rounds and seven games later you have a champion. Enter scores on your phone and winners move across the bracket, print a clean landscape copy for the wall, or share a link the whole group can follow. Only five to seven teams? Byes fill the gaps.
How it works
- Type eight namesPut your best seed on top. Fewer than eight teams? Just list the ones you have and the top seeds get byes.
- Check the matchupsThe quarterfinals appear right away. Drag names to swap them, or shuffle for a random draw. Add a third-place game in the options.
- Score, print or shareTap a game to enter the score and the winner moves on. Print the bracket in landscape, or share the link and QR code.
8 team bracket matchups and seeding
A seeded 8 team bracket pairs the best with the worst. In each quarterfinal the two seeds add up to 9:
- Top half: 1 v 8 and 4 v 5. Their winners meet in the first semifinal.
- Bottom half: 3 v 6 and 2 v 7. Their winners meet in the second semifinal.
That layout means seeds 1 and 2 can only meet in the final, and the 1 seed’s likely semifinal opponent is the 4 seed, not the 2. It’s the same structure every major bracket uses, scaled down. If you don’t have rankings, a random shuffle is the fair choice; if two teams from the same club or family shouldn’t meet first, drag one of them to the other half.
How many games in an 8 team bracket?
Seven games over three rounds: 4 quarterfinals, 2 semifinals and the final. Each game knocks out one team, and seven teams have to go out to leave a champion.
- The champion and the runner-up play 3 games each.
- The semifinal losers play 2 games, or 3 if you add a third-place game.
- The quarterfinal losers play 1 game.
A third-place game brings the total to 8. For comparison, the same 8 teams need 14 or 15 games in double elimination and 28 in a full round robin.
How long does an 8 team tournament take?
Count waves of play. A wave is one set of games that can run at the same time. With 45-minute games plus a short changeover:
- 1 court: 7 waves, about 5½ hours.
- 2 courts: 4 waves (quarterfinals in two waves, then semifinals, then the final), about 3 hours.
- 4 courts: 3 waves, about 2¼ hours.
A third-place game adds no time if it runs on a second court next to the final. For a 10 a.m. start on two courts: quarterfinals at 10:00 and 10:45, semifinals at 11:30, final at 12:15. Shorter games scale down the same way: cornhole games of about 15 minutes finish an 8-team single-elimination bracket on two boards in about an hour.
Only 5, 6 or 7 teams?
An 8-slot bracket handles them with byes, which always go to the top seeds:
- 7 teams: seed 1 has a bye; the first round is 4 v 5, 3 v 6 and 2 v 7. Six games in all.
- 6 teams: seeds 1 and 2 have byes; the first round is 4 v 5 and 3 v 6. Five games.
- 5 teams: seeds 1, 2 and 3 have byes; only 4 v 5 plays in round one. Four games.
With 9 to 16 teams, use the 16 team bracket, which handles byes the same way.
Want more games for every team?
Half the field playing once is the price of a quick bracket. Two common ways to give everyone more:
- Double elimination: nobody is out until they lose twice. Every team plays at least 2 games, and the tournament takes 14 or 15.
- Two pools of 4, then semifinals: each pool plays a round robin (6 games per pool, 3 per team). The top two of each pool cross over in the semifinals, A1 v B2 and B1 v A2, then the final. That’s 15 games, or 16 with a third-place game, and every team plays at least 3.
For the pool version, run a round robin with 2 groups, then make a 4-team bracket from the top two of each group, entered in the order A1, B1, A2, B2: standard seeding (1 v 4, 2 v 3) then gives you the crossover.
