About the Round Robin Generator
A round robin is the fairest format there is: every team plays every other team, and the standings decide the champion. Paste 3 to 40 teams and this generator builds the whole schedule round by round, adds a rotating bye when the count is odd, and keeps a standings table that updates with every score. Need it shorter? Split the field into groups. Need it longer? Play a double round robin, home and away.
How it works
- Add teams or playersPaste the list, one per line. Any number from 3 to 40 works, and odd numbers get a fair, rotating bye.
- Choose round robinPick your sport to set the points for a win, draw and loss and the tiebreakers. In the advanced options you can play each opponent twice or split the field into 2 to 8 groups.
- Enter scores, watch the tableTap a game to enter the score. The standings update right away, with your tiebreakers applied in order. Share the link so every team has the schedule on their phone.
How many games in a round robin?
With n teams, every team plays n − 1 games, and the whole round robin has n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 games. An even number of teams needs n − 1 rounds; an odd number needs n rounds, because one team sits out each round.
- 4 teams: 6 games, 3 rounds
- 5 teams: 10 games, 5 rounds
- 6 teams: 15 games, 5 rounds
- 7 teams: 21 games, 7 rounds
- 8 teams: 28 games, 7 rounds
- 9 teams: 36 games, 9 rounds
- 10 teams: 45 games, 9 rounds
- 12 teams: 66 games, 11 rounds
- 14 teams: 91 games, 13 rounds
- 16 teams: 120 games, 15 rounds
- 20 teams: 190 games, 19 rounds
The count grows with the square of the field: double the teams and you roughly quadruple the games. That’s why round robins shine for small groups and leagues, and why bigger events split into groups.
How the schedule is built
The generator uses the circle method, the classic way to make a round robin schedule by hand. Picture the teams seated around a table with team 1 fixed in its seat. Each round, the teams facing each other play. Then everyone except team 1 moves one seat around the circle, and the next round’s pairs appear. After n − 1 moves, every pair has met exactly once.
With 6 teams, a schedule might open with 1 v 6, 2 v 5 and 3 v 4, then continue with 1 v 5, 6 v 4 and 2 v 3. Each round uses every team once, so nobody plays twice in a day while another team waits.
With an odd number of teams, the method adds an empty seat. Whoever sits across from it has the bye that round. With 7 teams, every team sits out exactly once in the 7 rounds and plays 6 games.
Too many games? Split into groups
Groups (or pools) keep the fairness of a round robin without the explosion in games. Each group plays its own round robin:
- 12 teams: one round robin is 66 games; 2 groups of 6 take 30, 3 groups of 4 take 18.
- 16 teams: 120 games as one league; 4 groups of 4 take 24.
- 20 teams: 190 games as one league; 4 groups of 5 take 40, 5 groups of 4 take 30.
- 24 teams: 6 groups of 4 take 36.
The generator spreads the top seeds across the groups (seed 1 in the first group, seed 2 in the second, and so on), so no group is stacked. Groups of 4 are the sweet spot: three games each and a real chance for every team. Afterward, list the group winners and runners-up in order and make a single elimination bracket for the playoffs.
Double round robin: home and away
In a double round robin every pair meets twice, once at home and once away. The game count doubles to n × (n − 1): 6 teams play 30 games over 10 rounds, and 8 teams play 56 over 14. It’s the standard shape for a league season, for chess or checkers, where each player should get the first move once, and for small video-game leagues.
Standings, points and tiebreakers
The table ranks teams by points, then by tiebreakers in the order you choose. Your sport sets sensible defaults: soccer gives 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw, hockey 2 and 1, chess 1 and a half. Sports without draws simply count wins.
- Head-to-head looks only at the games between the tied teams. With three or more teams tied, it builds a mini-table from the games among them. If that still can’t separate them, say A beat B, B beat C and C beat A, the next tiebreaker decides.
- Differential is points, goals, runs or sets scored minus conceded.
- Scored and wins reward attacking play and decisive results.
- Random draw goes last, for the rare tie nothing else breaks.
Publish your tiebreak order before the first game. If you use differential in a youth or rec event, consider a cap per game so nobody runs up the score.
Fitting it into a day or a season
Each round has half as many games as there are teams, so 8 teams play 4 games per round. With enough courts for all of them, a round is one wave of play. With fewer, it takes several: 8 teams on 2 courts need 2 waves per round, 14 waves in all. Six teams on 3 courts finish all 15 games in 5 waves, an easy afternoon at 45 minutes a game.
For a weekly league, one round is one week: 10 teams fill a 9-week season, or 18 weeks home and away. Mark a forfeit when a team doesn’t show, and the standings stay honest. The pickleball round robin page covers the other kind of round robin, where players rotate partners every round.

Questions people ask
How many games are in a 12 team round robin?
66 games. Each team plays the other 11 once, spread over 11 rounds of 6 games. A double round robin with 12 teams is 132 games over 22 rounds.
How does a round robin tournament work?
Every team plays every other team once, usually in rounds where everyone plays at the same time. Teams earn points for wins (and draws, where the sport allows them), and the standings table decides the winner, with tiebreakers for equal points.
How many rounds is a round robin with 7 teams?
Seven rounds. There are 21 games in total, 3 per round, and each team sits out exactly one round and plays 6 games.
How many games are in a round robin with 10 teams?
45 games: 10 × 9 ÷ 2. That’s 9 rounds of 5 games, and each team plays 9 times.
How do you break a tie in round robin standings?
Apply tiebreakers in a set order. A common order is head-to-head result, then point or goal differential, then points scored, then a random draw. With three or more tied teams, head-to-head uses a mini-table of only the games among them.
What is a double round robin?
Every pair plays twice, usually once at home and once away. The number of games doubles to n × (n − 1), so 6 teams play 30 games and 8 teams play 56.
How do you make a round robin schedule with an odd number of teams?
Add a bye. Each round one team sits out, and over the full schedule every team sits out exactly once. With 5 teams that’s 5 rounds of 2 games, 10 games in all.
