About the Pickleball Round Robin Generator
Run a pickleball round robin where everyone plays with someone new each round. Enter 4 to 24 players and the number of courts, and the generator deals out doubles games round by round: new partners, mixed-up opponents, and sit-outs shared evenly when the numbers don’t divide by four. Enter each game’s score and the standings rank every player on their own wins and point differential. It works just as well for tennis, padel and cornhole socials.
How it works
- Add the playersType or paste names, one per line. Every player is an individual here; partners are assigned for you each round.
- Set courts and roundsChoose rotating partners, then tell it how many courts you have and how many rounds you want to play. It works out who partners whom, who plays against whom, and who sits.
- Play, score, rotateAfter each game, tap it and enter the score, like 11–7. When the round is done, everyone checks their next court on the shared link or the posted QR code.
How a rotating-partner round robin works
Each round, players are split into teams of two and sent to courts, four players per court. Next round, everyone gets a new partner and new opponents. Nobody is stuck with the same partner all night, beginners and stronger players mix, and a social group gets to know each other.
Because partners change, results belong to the player, not the team. Win a game and you get the win; your partner gets one too. The standings rank players by wins first, then by point differential: points your teams scored minus points they gave up. A player who wins 11–3 gains 8 on differential; their opponents lose 8.
Fair partners, fair opponents, fair sit-outs
The generator chases three goals at once:
- Partners repeat as little as possible. You should play with as many different people as the number of rounds allows.
- Opponents are spread around. Nobody should face the same player round after round.
- Sit-outs are shared evenly. Nobody sits a second time until everyone has sat once.
For some player counts a perfect rotation exists, and it’s worth knowing them:
- 4 players, 1 court: 3 rounds and everyone has partnered everyone (AB v CD, AC v BD, AD v BC).
- 5 players, 1 court: 5 rounds. One player sits each round, everyone sits exactly once, and every pair partners once and plays against each other twice.
- 8 players, 2 courts: 7 rounds is the magic number. It’s possible for every player to partner each of the other 7 exactly once and face each of them exactly twice.
- 12 players, 3 courts: 11 rounds for everyone to partner everyone once.
Other counts can’t be perfect, but the generator keeps repeats to a minimum.
When the players don’t divide by four
Each court holds four players, so the number playing each round is four times the courts in use, and the rest sit. Some common setups:
- 6 players, 1 court: 2 sit each round. In 3 rounds everyone sits once and plays twice.
- 9 players, 2 courts: 1 sits each round. In 9 rounds everyone sits once.
- 10 players, 2 courts: 2 sit each round. In 5 rounds everyone sits once and plays 4 games.
- 14 players, 3 courts: 2 sit each round. In 7 rounds everyone sits once.
Rule of thumb: pick a number of rounds that lets everyone sit the same number of times. Total sit-outs are (players − 4 × courts) × rounds, so 10 players on 2 courts sit 2 per round, and 5 rounds give each player exactly one rest. If you have more courts than you can fill, the extra courts simply stay empty.
How long does it take?
A recreational game to 11 takes about 12 to 15 minutes. With court changes, plan 15 minutes a round:
- 8 players, 2 courts, 7 rounds: about 1 hour 45 minutes.
- 12 players, 3 courts, 11 rounds: nearly 3 hours, so most groups play 6 to 8 rounds instead.
- 16 players, 4 courts, 6 rounds: about 90 minutes.
Booked the courts for exactly 90 minutes? Play timed rounds: start every court together, stop at 12 minutes, finish the rally in play and record the score. Agree in advance that a tied game plays one more rally.
Scoring for a pickleball social
The pickleball preset plays one game per round to 11, win by 2, with traditional side-out scoring: only the serving team scores. Some groups prefer games to 15, or rally scoring to 15 or 21, where every rally scores; change the target in the options before you start. Record every score, not just the winner, because point differential separates players on equal wins at the end.
Fixed teams and pickleball brackets
Got set doubles teams instead? Enter each team as one line and use a regular round robin: 6 teams play 15 games over 5 rounds. For a club tournament with a champion, a double elimination bracket is the usual choice, often with medal matches played best 2 of 3 games to 11.
The same rotating-partner format suits tennis doubles socials, padel Americanos and blind-draw cornhole. Pick the sport and the scoring follows: tennis plays sets, padel counts points, and cornhole games go to 21.
Running it on the day
- Check in first. Enter only the players who are there, then generate. A no-show in round three throws off the whole rotation.
- Number your courts with cones or tape so “Court 2” means the same court to everyone.
- Share before round one. Post the QR code by the courts or text the view link; players look up their own court and partner, so the organizer can play too.
- Put the standings on a TV in the clubhouse with TV mode, or print the full schedule for the fence.
Questions people ask
How do you run a pickleball round robin for 8 players?
Use 2 courts and 7 rounds. Each round puts four players on each court, and over 7 rounds it’s possible for every player to partner each of the others exactly once and face each of them twice. At about 15 minutes a round, it takes around 1 hour 45 minutes.
How many rounds should a pickleball round robin be?
For a casual social, 6 to 8 rounds of games to 11 fills about 90 minutes to 2 hours. If the player count doesn’t divide by four, choose a number of rounds that gives everyone the same number of sit-outs.
What if the number of players isn’t a multiple of 4?
The extra players sit out each round, and the sit-outs rotate so nobody sits twice before everyone has sat once. With 10 players on 2 courts, 2 sit each round and 5 rounds give everyone exactly one rest.
How do you score a pickleball round robin?
Each game is usually one game to 11, win by 2. Every player on the winning team gets a win, and players are ranked by total wins, then by point differential across all their games.
How long does a pickleball round robin take?
Plan about 15 minutes per round for games to 11, including changing courts. Seven rounds take about 1 hour 45 minutes; timed 12-minute rounds keep you to an exact court booking.
Can I use this for tennis, padel or cornhole socials?
Yes. Pick the sport and the scoring changes with it: tennis plays sets, padel Americanos count points, and cornhole games go to 21. The partner rotation works the same way.
Can I run a pickleball round robin with fixed partners?
Yes. Enter each team as one name and choose the regular round robin: every team plays every other team once, so 6 teams play 15 games over 5 rounds.
