About the Pickleball Tournament Bracket
Run a pickleball tournament bracket for doubles teams without the whiteboard. Type the pairs, one team per line, and you get a double elimination bracket with a back draw, so every team plays at least twice, or switch to single elimination for a quick event. The pickleball preset scores games to 11, win by 2. Enter each game as it finishes and the winners move on by themselves, losers drop into the back draw, and everyone at the courts can follow the live bracket from one link or a QR code.
How it works
- Enter the pairsOne team per line, like “Alex & Sam”, best team first. Mixed, men’s and women’s divisions each get their own bracket.
- Pick the formatDouble elimination with a back draw is the default. Single elimination suits a short event, and a round robin with a playoff guarantees the most games.
- Score games and shareTap a match, enter the game score and the court if you like. Share the link so teams see who they play next and where.
Pickleball tournament formats
Most club and rec pickleball events use one of four formats. Pick the one that fits your courts and your time:
- Double elimination (front and back draw): the tournament standard. A team that loses in the main bracket, the front draw, drops into the back draw and keeps playing. A team is out after its second loss. The front-draw winner and the back-draw winner meet for gold.
- Single elimination: one loss and you’re out. Fastest, but half the teams play only once, so it suits a short lunchtime or evening event.
- Pool play, then a bracket: teams play a round robin in groups of 4, then the top two of each group go on to a playoff. Choose round robin, set the groups and pick a playoff under More options; the bracket fills in as each group finishes.
- Rotating partners: a social where players change partners every round and everyone is ranked on their own results. That format has its own page: the pickleball round robin generator.
How the back draw works
In double elimination the losers bracket is often called the back draw in pickleball. First-round losers start there right away, and teams that lose later in the front draw drop in at the matching round, placed so they don’t meet the same opponents again too soon. The back draw winner reaches the gold medal match with one loss, while the front draw winner arrives unbeaten.
If the back draw team wins that match, both teams now have one loss. Many events play a second match to settle it; others play a single tiebreak game, often to 15. The bracket handles both: the second final appears only when it’s needed, and you can turn it off under More options if your event always ends after one gold medal match. The loser of the back draw final takes bronze.
Scoring games to 11
The preset plays one game to 11, win by 2, which keeps a bracket moving. For later rounds or medal matches, switch to best of 3 games under More options, and enter each game as it’s played, like 11–7, 9–11, 11–8. The score sheet never blocks a game that doesn’t end at 11, so tournaments that play to 15 or 21, or use rally scoring with a time cap, can enter their own scores.
A team that doesn’t show can be given a forfeit from the same score sheet. The other team advances and the bracket carries on.
How long does a pickleball tournament take?
A doubles game to 11 takes about 15 to 20 minutes, a best of 3 match closer to 40. Double elimination needs twice as many matches as there are teams, give or take one:
- 8 teams: 14 or 15 matches. On 4 courts, about 2 hours with one game per match.
- 12 teams: 22 or 23 matches, roughly 3 hours on 4 courts.
- 16 teams: 30 or 31 matches, a half day on 4 courts.
The deeper rounds of the back draw can only start when the front draw has sent down its losers, so leave a little slack at the end. Assign courts as you go: add the court number and a start time to a match and it shows on everyone’s “Up next” list, so teams know where to go without asking.
Seeding and skill divisions
List the pairs from strongest to weakest, using player ratings, club levels or last event’s results, and the bracket places them so the top two seeds can only meet in the final. Byes go to the top seeds when the number of teams isn’t a power of two: 6 teams in an 8-team bracket gives seeds 1 and 2 a bye.
For a bigger event, split players by skill level, such as 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, or by mixed, men’s and women’s doubles, and make one bracket per division. Each one gets its own link and QR code, so you can post them all at the check-in table. Running a social instead of a tournament? The rotating partners round robin mixes everyone up and ranks players individually.
Questions people ask
How do you make a pickleball bracket?
Type the doubles teams, one per line in seed order, keep the pickleball preset and press Create. You get a double elimination bracket with a back draw, scored in games to 11, that you can share, show on a TV or print.
What is a back draw in pickleball?
It’s the losers bracket in a double elimination tournament. Teams that lose in the main draw drop into the back draw and keep playing; a second loss knocks them out. The back draw winner plays the main draw winner for gold.
How many matches does each team play in a double elimination pickleball tournament?
At least two: a team that loses its first two matches is out. In an 8-team bracket the champion plays four matches if it never loses, and more if it comes through the back draw.
How long does a pickleball tournament take?
With games to 11 and 4 courts, an 8-team double elimination bracket takes about 2 hours and a 16-team bracket about half a day. Best of 3 matches roughly double that.
Should I use a bracket or a round robin for pickleball?
A bracket crowns a champion quickly. A round robin, or pool play followed by a playoff, guarantees everyone several games, which is why many club events start with pools.
How do you seed a pickleball tournament?
Rank the pairs by rating or results and list them best first. The top seeds are kept apart until the late rounds and get any byes.
Can I run separate skill divisions?
Yes. Make one bracket per division, for example 3.5 mixed and 4.0 men’s, and share each link. Everyone follows their own bracket live.
