About the Fixture Generator

Generate the fixtures for a football league, a five-a-side league or any competition where every team plays every other. Paste the team names and you get a full fixture list, round by round, home and away, with a bye each round when the number of teams is odd. Enter the results as they come in and the league table updates itself: 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, goal difference next. Share it with one link, print it for the clubhouse or download it as a CSV for Excel.

How it works

  1. Enter the teamsType or paste them one per line, or import a CSV or text file with a Team column. Up to 40 teams fit in one league.
  2. Home and away, or once eachHome and away is ticked: every team plays every other twice, once at each ground. Untick it for a single round robin, or split the teams into divisions with groups.
  3. Enter results, the table followsTap a fixture and type the score. The league table re-sorts by points, then goal difference and goals scored, or in the order you choose.

How the fixture list is made

The fixtures come from the circle method, the classic way to draw up a league schedule by hand. One team stays put while the others rotate one place each round, so every team plays exactly once per round and meets every other team once. With an odd number of teams, one team has a bye each round and every team rests exactly once.

Home and away is shared out evenly: in a single round robin each team’s home and away games differ by at most one, and in a home-and-away league the second half of the season repeats the first with every fixture reversed, so each team plays exactly as many games at home as away.

Fixtures and matchweeks by league size

With n teams, a single round robin has n(n − 1)/2 fixtures. With an even number of teams that takes n − 1 matchweeks; with an odd number it takes n, because one team sits out each week. Home and away doubles both:

  • 6 teams: 15 fixtures over 5 matchweeks, or 30 over 10 home and away.
  • 8 teams: 28 fixtures over 7 matchweeks, or 56 over 14.
  • 10 teams: 45 fixtures over 9 matchweeks, or 90 over 18.
  • 12 teams: 66 fixtures over 11 matchweeks, or 132 over 22.
  • 20 teams: 190 fixtures over 19 matchweeks, or 380 over 38, the size of a top-flight season in England.

Short on weeks? Split the league into two divisions or groups, and the generator spreads the teams so the strongest two start apart.

The league table

Every result updates the table at once. The football preset gives 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss, then separates teams level on points by goal difference, goals scored, the results between them and, as a last resort, drawing lots. Change the points or reorder the tiebreakers if your league’s rules differ; some leagues put head-to-head first.

A team that doesn’t turn up can be given a walkover, recorded as a 3–0 win to the other side, and a wrong score can be corrected at any time: the table recalculates from the fixtures, so it can’t drift out of step with the results.

Matchweeks, pitches and kickoff times

Each round is a matchweek: round 1 is week 1, round 2 is week 2, and so on. For leagues that play several rounds in one session, such as an evening five-a-side league or a one-day round robin, Courts & times gives every fixture a pitch and a kickoff time. Enter the first kickoff, the minutes per game and the number of pitches, and no team plays two games at once. It can also name a team that’s resting as the referee for each game, shared out evenly.

For indoor and small-sided leagues choose the futsal preset on the sports page; it keeps draws and the 3-1-0 table.

Knockout fixtures and cup draws

A cup runs differently: one game per tie, and the winner goes through. Switch the format to single elimination for a knockout draw. Shuffle the teams for an open draw, or keep them in seed order so the top seeds are kept apart and get the byes when the number of teams isn’t a power of two. See the single elimination bracket for the details.

For a tournament with groups first and a knockout after, the usual summer-tournament format, start from the soccer tournament bracket: group tables, then a seeded knockout that fills itself.

Fixture lists in Excel, print and on your website

The fixtures and table don’t need retyping anywhere else. Download CSV saves the fixtures with round, pitch, time, referee and score, plus the table, ready for Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice. Print gives a clean landscape page of fixtures and table with a QR code to the live version. The share link shows players the latest results without an account, and the embed code puts the live table on a club website.

Nothing to install and no sign-up: the league lives in your browser until you share it. For other sports the same generator lives on the round robin generator page.

Questions people ask

How do you generate fixtures for a league?

Enter the teams one per line and the fixture generator draws up every round with the circle method: each team plays once a round and meets every other team, home and away if you choose. Enter results and the league table updates itself.

How many fixtures are there in a 10 team league?

45 if every team plays every other once, over 9 matchweeks. Home and away it’s 90 fixtures over 18 matchweeks.

How many matchweeks does a 20 team league have?

38 when every team plays every other home and away: 19 in each half of the season, with 10 fixtures a week and 380 in all.

What happens with an odd number of teams in a league?

One team has a bye each round. With 7 teams there are 7 rounds of 3 fixtures, and every team sits out exactly once.

Can I export the fixtures to Excel?

Yes. Download CSV saves the fixtures and the league table as files that open in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.

Can the fixture generator make a knockout cup draw?

Yes. Switch the format to single elimination for a knockout draw with byes for the top seeds, or to round robin with groups for a group stage followed by a knockout.

Do teams play the same number of home and away games?

In a home-and-away league, yes: the second half of the season reverses every fixture. In a single round robin, home and away games differ by at most one for every team.
