About the Soccer Tournament Bracket

Run a soccer tournament the way most club and youth events do: a group stage first, then a knockout bracket. Enter your teams and the generator splits them into balanced groups, gives 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw, and sorts each table by goal difference. When a group finishes, its top two move into a seeded knockout bracket, and Courts & times turns the whole day into a field-by-field schedule with kickoff times. Coaches and parents follow it all on one live link.

How it works

  1. Enter the teamsType or paste them one per line, best first if you know it, so the strongest teams start in different groups. Use the age group in the event line, like U10 Boys.
  2. Choose groups and the knockoutGroups of 4 are the classic size: three games each. Under More options, pick how many teams go through from each group and whether to play a third-place game.
  3. Enter scores, the bracket fills itselfTap a game and type the score, like 2–1. In the knockout a level score asks who won on penalties, and the winner moves on.

How a soccer group stage works

Each group plays a round robin: every team plays every other team in its group once. A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 and a loss 0, the system used in almost every league and tournament since the 1990s. The size of the group sets how many games each team is guaranteed:

  • Group of 3: 3 games in the group, 2 for each team.
  • Group of 4: 6 games, 3 for each team. The usual choice for a one-day or weekend event.
  • Group of 5: 10 games, 4 for each team, and one team rests in every round.
  • Group of 6: 15 games. Better as a league than as part of a tournament day.

Teams are spread across the groups in snake order, so seeds 1 and 2 never start in the same group. With 8 teams that means groups A and B of four; with 16 teams, four groups of four.

Breaking ties in the group table

The soccer preset ranks teams on points, then goal difference (goals scored minus goals allowed), then goals scored, then the result between the tied teams, and finally drawing lots. That’s the order most youth tournaments print in their rules. European competitions put head-to-head first instead; drag the tiebreakers into your rulebook’s order before the first kickoff and the table follows it.

Many youth events cap the goal difference a team can earn in one game, often at 3 or 4, so nobody runs up the score. The table counts the score you enter, so if your rules use a cap, enter the capped score and keep the real one on the referee’s card.

Tournament formats by number of teams

  • 6 teams: two groups of 3, then semifinals and a final: 6 group games and 3 knockout games. Or one group where everyone plays everyone, 15 games.
  • 8 teams: two groups of 4, the top two into semifinals, group winners against runners-up from the other group (A1 v B2, B1 v A2). 12 group games plus 3 knockout games, 16 with a third-place game.
  • 12 teams: three groups of 4 and a 6-team knockout in which two group winners get a bye into the semifinals. 18 group games, 5 knockout games.
  • 16 teams: four groups of 4 and an 8-team knockout: quarterfinals, semifinals, final. 24 group games plus 7 knockout games.
  • 24 teams: six groups of 4 and the top two into a 12-team knockout, or eight groups of 3 on a short day.

Only want a knockout? Pick single elimination for a straight cup bracket: byes go to the top seeds when the number of teams isn’t 8, 16 or 32. More on brackets of every size on the single elimination page.

Making the game schedule

Open Courts & times and enter the first kickoff, the minutes per game slot and how many fields you have. Every game gets a field and a start time. No team plays two games at once, each team gets the rest you set between its games, groups stay on their own field when there are enough fields, and the knockout waits until its groups are finished. A game running late? Plan again and the games already played keep their slots.

An example: 16 teams on 4 fields, 7v7 games of two 20-minute halves, 45-minute slots including the changeover. Each group plays its 6 games on its own field, so the group stage takes 4½ hours. Quarterfinals on all four fields, semifinals on two and the final on one add three more slots, about 2¼ hours.

Need a soccer tournament schedule template on paper? Print the schedule with the group tables, or download it as a CSV for Excel or Google Sheets with field, time and referee for every game.

Field sizes and game length for youth soccer

In the US, small-sided play follows age: 4v4 for U6 to U8, 7v7 for U9 and U10, 9v9 for U11 and U12, and full 11v11 from U13. Tournament games are shorter than league games so teams can play three or four in a weekend: halves of 20 to 25 minutes for 7v7 and 25 to 30 for 9v9 are common. Leave 5 to 10 minutes between games for the changeover and at least an hour of rest for a team between games on a hot day.

For indoor and five-a-side events pick the futsal preset on the sports page: shorter games on courts and the same group-and-knockout plan.

Knockout games, penalties and the final

A knockout game can’t end level. Most youth tournaments go straight to penalty kicks, and older age groups often play two short halves of extra time first. Enter the score at the end of play, like 1–1, and pick the team that won the shootout: they move on and the score stays as it was. A forfeit sends the other team through.

The bracket is seeded across groups so two teams from the same group can only meet again in the final. Add a third-place game under More options if you have medals for third. For a season of weekly games instead of a tournament day, the fixture generator makes a league schedule, home and away.

Questions people ask

How do you make a soccer tournament bracket?

Enter the teams, choose soccer and round robin with groups, and pick how many teams go through from each group. The generator makes the groups, a 3-1-0 table for each and a seeded knockout bracket that fills itself as the group games are scored.

How many points is a win in soccer?

Three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. If your league still uses two points for a win, change the points under More options.

What is the tiebreaker in a soccer group stage?

Usually goal difference, then goals scored, then the result between the tied teams, then drawing lots. European competitions check head-to-head first. You can reorder the tiebreakers to match your rules.

How many games are in a soccer group of 4?

Six. Every team plays the other three once, so each team plays three group games.

What happens if a knockout game ends in a draw?

It goes to penalty kicks, or extra time and then penalties, depending on the rules. Enter the score at the end of play and pick who won the shootout; that team moves on.

How do you schedule a soccer tournament on several fields?

Use Courts & times: enter the first kickoff, the minutes per game and the number of fields. Every game gets a field and a kickoff time, with rest between a team’s games and the knockout after its groups.

How do you set up a 16 team soccer tournament?

Four groups of 4 on four fields, 24 group games in all. The top two from each group play an 8-team knockout: quarterfinals, semifinals and a final, with group winners meeting runners-up from other groups first.
